How weight conversion works
Strictly, these units measure mass, though everyday language calls it weight. The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and every other imperial unit is based on it: 1 ounce is 1/16 of a pound and 1 stone is 14 pounds. The calculator converts your value to kilograms and then to the unit you chose.
Kilograms = pounds × 0.453592
Ounces = pounds × 16 Stone = pounds ÷ 14
Quick reference
| Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|
| 1 kg | 2.20 lb |
| 5 kg | 11.02 lb |
| 10 kg | 22.05 lb |
| 50 kg | 110.23 lb |
| 100 kg | 220.46 lb |
For a quick mental estimate, double the kilograms and add 10%. So 70 kg is roughly 140 + 14 = 154 lb (the exact answer is 154.3 lb).
Where you will see each unit
- Kilograms and grams: most of the world, and all scientific work.
- Pounds and ounces: the United States, and for some purposes in the UK and Canada.
- Stone: body weight in the UK and Ireland. 11 stone 4 lb is 158 lb, or about 71.7 kg.
- Metric tonnes: very heavy loads. Note that a US ton is 2,000 lb, which is different.
